How Gran Turismo Changed Racing Games Forever

Here's a question for those of you who are gamers: What was the first game that truly hooked you into gaming? For me, it was Gran Turismo 2. Before then, I had time with racing games and games from other genres, but GT2 was by far and away the game I spent the most time on and associated the most memories with my 90's gaming era. Personally, I thought it was amazing and built different.

Before I got the chance to dabble into the world of Gran Turismo, it was already a hit and sold 6 million copies in its first year and went on to become the best selling Playstation 1 game in the world. So what made Gran Turismo so special? Donut Media provides a detailed overview into the fascinating history of Gran Turismo and the knock-on effect this had on gaming as a whole. If you didn't already know, Gran Turismo's origins could be traced back to a Mario Kart knock-off known as Motor Toon Grand Prix. While Kazunori Yamauchi has always wanted to create an accessible realistic racing game, he couldn't get approval from publishers to make the game.

Thankfully, Motor Toon turned out to be enough of a success to fund the Gran Turismo series we know and love today. Check out the video below for more:
