Honda flips expectations with the introduction of the Civic Type R Sport Line

Performance trims are very common in the modern automotive landscape, including tags such as ST-Line (Ford), R-Line (VW) and M Sport (BMW). When you see a car equipped with a performance line badge, you expect the car to feature sportier, more aggressive features than the base model, right? Well, that hasn't been the case for Honda's latest debut; the Civic Type R Sport Line.

You see, the standard Civic Type R is undoubtedly the lairiest hot hatch produced today in terms of design, so it would make more sense to alter the styling which makes it look more restrained... Which is exactly what Honda did. Most notably, the large rear spoiler has been replaced with a much smaller wing found on the regular Civic Sport Line. In terms of aerodynamics, that's the only change you will find, so "understated" is still a phrase you will struggle to associate with the Sport Line.

Other visual changes include grey 19-inch wheels, removal of red highlights on the exterior and a predominantly black interior with red stitching. Crucially, wasn't hasn't been changed is the performance which retains a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder engine producing 316hp, capable of launching the Tamer Type R to 60mph in 5.7 seconds.

If you prefer your Type R with outlandish styling, the regular model is still available and it has been joined by track-day special. Fittingly called the Limited Edition, this model prioritizes outright performance over comfort and features a whole host of weight-saving measures which shave 47 kilos off the total weight. However, you must be a very keen driver for those savings to be worthwhile, because those measures include the removal of soundproofing, air-con and even the infotainment system. The latter two only apply to the European models, of which there will only be 100. To make sure you don't mistake the Limited Edition for any other Type R, all models will be finished in the exclusive shade of Phoenix Yellow.

So there you have it; in 2020, you will be able to pick a Type R in 3 different flavours. The question is, which is the right one for you?
