GRID vs Need For Speed: Which game will be the Arcade Racer of 2019?

At this stage, what we know about these two games couldn't be any more different from each other. With GRID, virtually no-one had any idea a GRID game would be releasing this year, especially as DiRT Rally is still receiving ongoing support and F1 2019 is expected to be released next month. With Need For Speed, on the other hand, we are aware a sequel to EA's racing franchise should be released by the end of the year, but everything else about the game is being kept under wraps for now.

Starting off with the game we do know something about, GRID marks the return of the critically-acclaimed multi-disciplinary racer which is famous for balancing the thrills of fiercely competitive simulation racing with the accessibility and fun of the arcade racing genre. Some would argue the Race Driver series popularised the use of the term "simcade" due to its unique proposition. From the gameplay footage we have already seen so far, it looks like the reboot follows in the footsteps of its predecessors in delivering that realistic yet slightly-overboard race day experience.

Long term fans of the Race Driver series would instantly feel at home from watching the gameplay video above. For starters, the San Francisco street circuit makes a return from GRID and GRID Autosport, while there are various nods to GRID 2 with the player using the Mustang Boss 302 which was your starter car in the 2013 game. From the driving style, the game has dropped the controversial drift-favoured handling style of GRID 2 in favour of more realistic cornering styles. As ever with any game by Codemasters, the sounds are top notch and really create a sense of immersion. As long as your preference of motorsport covers tarmac, GRID should have you covered; players can chose to race in stock cars, modified cars, touring cars, open wheelers, prototypes plus more and race on 12 carefully chosen racing environments from around the world.

The space above is where I would place a gameplay video or screenshot of Need For Speed 2019, but we literally have no information about the game whatsoever. However, we did get a new "Under The Hood" post on Reddit which pretty much says Ghost Games are hard at work creating a special title to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Need For Speed, but they do not have anything to show now, or for the foreseeable future as they will not be present at E3.

Considering how the latest Need For Speed title is not making its debut at the world's largest gaming show, it's only natural to feel slightly concerned about the confidence the team have in what they have developed so far, but on the other hand this could be a sign they do not want to show a rushed build of the game. After all, the game is still half a year away from its expected release date.

What we do know so far is that the next title is supposed to be capturing the "Essence" of a Need For Speed game, placing the emphasis on car culture, customisation and police chases. This means the Hollywood action movie style campaign mode from games like The Run and Payback are unlikely to be featured in the upcoming game.

It's not hard to spot a recurring theme; both games aspire to bring back what each series is known for. GRID deals with the competitive, and sometimes gritty side of closed track racing while Need For Speed provides illicit thrills from driving some of the world's most desirable performance cars. By the end of the summer, we are sure to know a lot more about each title so stay tuned for more coverage!
