A Porsche For Everyone!

If you know your racing games, you would be aware of the reason why Porsche may have been omitted from some of your favourite racing titles featuring real world vehicles. Back in 2001, or the debut of Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed, EA was given exclusive rights to the Stuttgart based sports car manufacturer. That was a 15-year binding contract and if you do the maths, you would have discovered that period timed out last year and Porsche had no interest in renewing that agreement. This means Porsche is now free from the clutches of EA and is free to issue out the licence to any game developer as and when they wish to do so. And this week we have witnessed some seriously impressive debuts and other implications as some of the biggest racing titles highlighted in this post have shown.

Let's start with Gran Turismo because this actually marks the first time Porsche has been present in what is arguably the world's most recognised racing sim franchise. What is particularly interesting is that Gran Turismo Sport was originally intended to be released last year, while the EA agreement was still in effect. I guess you could say the delay was a blessing in disguise as we are now able to race Porsches in the style imagined by Polyphony Digital and if you take a look at the screenshot above, you would be hard pressed to find a better looking racing game. Simply amazing.

If you want to take a Porsche for a spin in a critically acclaimed racing game, you don't even have to wait as the Porsche Pack was just released for Forza Horizon 3. Forza games have been the only titles to include Porsche vehicles during EA's hold over the licence, but sub-contracting terms meant they could only be available to players through costly expansion passes. Even though players have to pay for 7 of the new Porsches added to Forza Horizon 3, more will be available to players for free by participating in Forzathon challenges.

Turn 10 has also got sim racing fans covered with a 75% discount for the Porsche Expansion pass for Forza Motorsport 6 during the Xbox Spring Sale, which ends April 17th. In the UK store, that means the expansion can be picked up for just £4! This pass grants you access to 20 new vehicles, a new track (Virginia International Raceway) and a unique campaign mode centred around Stuttgart's finest automobiles and racing legacy.
